In recent years, I’ve found myself working more and more with copper. I’m drawn to it because of the way its colours develop and transform when heated — something I find endlessly compelling. As a soft metal, copper can be manipulated with ease into many forms, whether for sculpture or framing. That said, painting remains my first passion, so much of my copper work is created to complement and enhance a painting.

about me
Hi I’m Paul Spiers, I’m a Kent based artist who likes to integrate different materials into my art. I’m primarily a painter but have been working as an engineer for the last 20 years so have been using copper and stainless steel on a daily basis and found along the way that I can utilise and manipulate these materials as I see fit and incorporate them into my art.
My background: My story is the same as so many artist, I was the kid at school who was obsessed with drawing, but when the time came to get out there into the working world I hadn’t a clue how to turn that into a job. Luckily enough for me I was able to work as a pipe fitter for the family business. All the while keeping my passion for creating running in the background. As I was working with these metals I continued I figured out how I would use them to my advantage and what I could do with them.
Where I’m at now: So now I’m making a go of selling the art I create, but now with the know how to put together something quite unique. Combining painting and copper manipulation. Each piece starts with an idea and develops into something close to what I had in mind at first. I love the colour of copper and often use complimentary opposite colours to create interesting contrasts in the work.
I also love to sketch, and sketch pretty big (a3 and or bigger) so many of my sketches I’ll simply load onto the website to be viewed. I use sketches as many artist do to help me think up ideas and move forward with potential projects. Which may later end up on a copper sculpture or painting…
